Probably the most commonly used piece of evidence in today's courtroom is the photograph. Of the various topics in the field of Forensic Photography, one of the most important is the correct viewing distance of that photograph.

When a photograph is intended to show relative distances or sizes of objects, it is paramount that the picture be viewed at the correct viewing distance, or it will be totally misrepresentative.

Basically, if the photograph was taken out to the scene and held up to your eye, it must act as an overlay. Hold it too close, the objects will appear larger than in real life. Hold it too far; the objects will appear smaller than in real life.
